There are two types of prescription only medication that can help you stop smoking: Champix and Zyban - they both come as a pill to be taken daily. Both medications can roughly double your chance of stopping smoking for good.

COVID-19 and Getting Prescribed Medications

We are now in a National Lockdown: Stay at Home. If you have access to online/telephone medical services you may be able to get a prescription for Champix (varenicline) at this time. However, using combination NRT is equally as effective as Champix. NRT can be purchased online from pharmacies and supermarkets for delivery to your home.

Prescribed Medications -Varenicline (Champix) and Bupropion (Zyban)

Champix and Zyban both reduce nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms e.g. feeling irritable, disturbed sleep and increased appetite. Champix can also reduce the feelings of pleasure you experience when smoking.

Stop smoking tablets won't take away the thought of cigarettes completely. However, your determination along with the use of the other methods explained on this website can make it much more likely you will stop smoking for good.

Champix

Champix has been available in the UK for approximately 12 years and has been shown to more than double your chances of stopping smoking for good. Champix has better success rates than Zyban and single forms of NRT.

How to use

You start taking Champix at 1-2 weeks before your stop date to give the medication a chance to start working. The course of Champix lasts for 12 weeks, it’s really important to commit to the full 12 week programme to give yourself the best chance of stopping smoking.

Show me everything

One of the best ways to stop smoking for good is to combine different types of support.

You are more likely to stop smoking by mixing and matching personal support like motivational support from a health advisor with NRT, a prescription medication or e-cigarettes. So don’t put it off, put it out.
